A set of pre-cut masks in 1:32 scale for the Hawker Hurricane fighter in its Mk.IID version. It is neither a kit nor decals but an aid for painting: the masks are stuck onto the glazed areas of the model, those are sprayed over with the framing color, and once the masks come off a sharp edge is left with no bleeding. In 1:32 scale the cockpit canopy is large and its framing dominates the view, so a frame painted by hand tends to be the most visible of all the imperfections on a model. The exact contents of the set, the number of pieces and the material used are stated on the packaging of the set.
The Hurricane has a canopy with a pronounced divided structure and flat panes, plus an armored windshield and side windows. Straight lines are precisely the reason why framing is hard to paint freehand: every hesitation of the brush shows immediately on a straight edge. Pre-cut masks follow the shape of the particular panes, so there is no hand-cutting of strips of masking tape and no guessing at the width of the frame. The Mk.IID version is also a machine with large-caliber underwing armament, so a finished model with a cleanly masked cockpit is usually built as a showpiece.
First rid the glazing of grease and dust. Lift the masks off the backing with tweezers, lay them down dry and press them with a stick or a toothpick, especially in the corners and on curves, so that paint cannot run under them. First spray the interior shade, then the external color, so that the frame is right on both sides. Spray in thin coats and at lower pressure, because a heavy coat tends to build up under the edge of a mask. Take the masks off shortly after drying and with an angled pull, not straight up. If a small bleed does appear, lift it away with a toothpick or a wooden point moistened with the thinner for the paint used.
