Eduard 1:32 North American F-100F Super Sabre - a masking set

A set of precisely cut self-adhesive masks from the Czech maker Eduard for a model of the North American F-100F Super Sabre in 1:32 scale. The masks are cut from kabuki tape, that is, from a fine Japanese masking tape that holds well even on slightly curved surfaces, forms no capillary for paint to run under the edge and leaves no adhesive on the clear parts once it is taken off. This is neither a kit nor a finished model but an accessory that shortens the most tiresome part of the build.

The real subject

The F-100 Super Sabre was the first American production fighter aircraft able to exceed the speed of sound in level flight. North American Aviation built it, and one jet engine with an afterburner provided the propulsion. The F-100F version is two-seat, with the seats one behind the other and a lengthened cockpit. Besides training, the two-seat machines were also used for tasks where a second crew member was an asset. A characteristic feature of the type is the oval air intake in the nose and the swept wing.

Use and tips

1:32 scale offers large areas of glazing where every inaccuracy shows. So stick the masks onto a perfectly degreased and dry surface and press the edge down along its whole length. First spray the frames with the shade of the interior. The Super Sabre is often built in a polished metal form, which reveals even a small amount of overspray, so spray several thin coats rather than not and take the mask off shortly after it has dried. Apply the metal shades only as the last coat, as they are hard to varnish over and hard to mask.
