A second pair of paintings by the same author: the machines numbered X26 and X44 bearing the names High Kicker and Butterfly Girl.

Combat aircraft in the Mediterranean were given names after whatever the crews missed most from home, and one handy soldier with a few cans of paint was enough to create them. This sheet in 1:32 scale offers two such paintings from the equipment of the 79th Fighter Group in 1943, both by the same hand as the better known examples of the same unit.
The machine with the fuselage number X26 belonged to the 85th Fighter Squadron and bore the name High Kicker; the aircraft X44 of the 86th Fighter Squadron was decorated with the name Butterfly Girl. The tall fuselage numbers served the unit for quick identification in the air and on the ground and are a rewarding motif for a modeler, because in this scale they take up a considerable part of the side of the fuselage.
Nose art did not last long in the field. Sand, a repair to the skin or a change of engine cowling meant a motif had to be repainted, which is why surviving photographs of the same aircraft often differ in detail. During a build, therefore, choose one photograph as binding and do not mix elements from different periods, otherwise a machine will appear that never flew.
From the building point of view this is a rewarding set: the motifs are large enough to carry even an imperfect surface, and at the same time they are applied to the flat sides of the fuselage with no complicated shaping. For a first attempt at a large scale it is a more suitable choice than large national insignia on the wings. Anyone who already has a pair of other machines of the same group built will add two more pieces to the same display case with this sheet, and the finish of the whole unit thereby takes on a coherent form that a single kit never offers.
