Stencils for the Curtiss P-40E in a large scale. The glazing is covered by two cuts for both faces, the insignia by a pair of stencils, and a decal sheet is not missing from the box either.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Curtiss P-40E with its Allison V engine and six 12.7 mm machine guns was neither the fastest nor the most agile, but it was built in tens of thousands and handed out to practically every ally. The British called it the Kittyhawk and flew it over the North African desert, the Australians used it over New Guinea, Soviet regiments received it by the northern route and American units held the Aleutians with it. One airframe shape, four different systems of markings.
That is the main difference between the two technologies. A decal is printed in fixed colors and what is on the sheet is what the customer gets. A die-cut film determines only the shape and the builder chooses the color according to the version being built. The same roundel mask thus serves for the British type with a blue and a light ring as well as for the American star; you simply reach for a different shade. On a machine that served in four air forces at once that is no trifle but a genuine saving.
The freedom has a limit: a multi-color insignia arises by layering and every layer needs its own drying time. Anyone who wants the insignia finished in an afternoon had better reach for a decal. The second limit is preparation time. A layered insignia needs the model set aside between passes and both masks ready in advance, because hunting for the second film with a loaded airbrush in your hand never ends well. Neither the aircraft model nor paints are in the box.
