Mustang IV is the British designation for the P-51D version, that is the machine with the lowered fuselage spine and the one-piece bubble canopy. Cutting the spine down looks like a detail, but for painting it meant a great deal: the tall wall behind the cockpit disappeared, and with it the line along which the boundary between the upper and the lower color ran on the older versions. The division thus moved lower and became more flowing, so two versions of the same aircraft have the transition led differently even though they carry the same shades.
In the last year of the war the Royal Air Force left most of its Mustangs in bare metal and made do with national roundels and with bands for the given theater. In East Asia broad white stripes were added on the rudder, on the horizontal stabilizers and on the wings, meant to tell Allied machines apart from Japanese ones. This was not camouflage but the exact opposite, recognition at a distance as quickly as possible. Anyone building a machine from this period therefore does not face a task with two shades and a soft transition, but a task with sharp edges and large areas, where the cleanliness of the edge decides.
A one-piece canopy has few frames, and all the more does every inaccuracy show. The cut-outs of film sit on the frame and hold a line that masking by hand with tape would not keep on a curved shape. The inner part of the set prevents sprayed paint from settling on the inner surface and fogging the cockpit. Neither the aircraft model nor paints are to be found in the package.
