About product

Francis Gabreski, July 1944 - a 200 mm bust

A bust from the Polish maker Mirage Hobby in a size of 200 mm. The figure denotes the height of the finished casting and is not a scale. The item is neither a figure for a scene nor an accessory for a kit; it is a stand-alone display object whose value rests on the modeling of the face and on the working of the flying clothing. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The subject is an American fighter pilot with the rank of lieutenant colonel, captured as he appeared in July 1944, that is during the deployment of American aviation over western Europe. For painting, the typical clothing of pilots of the time matters: a leather flying jacket, a service cap or a flying helmet, goggles and patches. The abbreviations of the rank in the name follow American usage and are not an error of transcription.

Assembly and painting tips

Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry so that the paint holds on them. Remove the parting lines with a scalpel and sand them with fine paper; in this format every overlooked seam shows. Apply the primer thinly and evenly. Build the face up in layers from the shadows toward the highlights, keep the transitions soft and finish the eyes first. The leather of the flying jacket is brought to life by glazes and by polishing to a high gloss in the most worn places; the textile parts, on the contrary, should be left completely matte, as the contrast of surfaces makes a bust readable. The patches and badges are worth painting with the finest possible brush and, if need be, emphasizing with dark run-in. A final matte coat evens the surface out, and a satin sheen can be brought back locally on the jacket.

Who the bust is for

  • Modelers focused on busts and portrait painting
  • Anyone interested in the flying clothing of the Second World War
  • Collectors of busts connected with aviation subjects
  • Advanced figure painters working with the contrast of surfaces

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No, it is the height of the finished casting. Busts are given by dimension rather than by scale like kits.

It is not intended for that. The 200 mm format is a display object that is usually set on a base of its own.

Go over the base with glazes and polish the surface slightly in the exposed places. The contrast with matte textile will give the bust depth.

You get the bust unassembled and unpainted. Paints and glue are not included in the package.
