The B form differs from the first Mustangs above all in its powerplant. The original American engine with good performance near the ground was replaced by a license-built British twelve-cylinder with a two-stage supercharger, and the machine came alive at the altitudes where the escort of bomber formations took place. It was with this version that the American fighter groups began escorting raids deep over the continent.
The set is die-cut to the shape of a particular molding, and with this version the shape of the cockpit happens to be treacherous. The B form was built with the original framed glazing, but a number of aircraft received a domed one-piece canopy in Britain that has an entirely different division. Before you apply the masks, lay the sheet on the dry molding and check that the frames line up. If your kit offers both glazing variants, what matters is which one you choose.
Laying them on without peeling off the backing takes a minute and saves a ruined part. Once the paper has been pressed down, lifting it and laying it again has no reliability.
The framed cockpit has several metal bars above the pilot and side panes divided by pillars. The domed canopy, by contrast, is a single transparent shell framed only around its perimeter. Masks cut for one form cannot be transferred to the other, because the pillars have nothing to seat on.
The pieces can at least be used as a template: lay them on the glass, trace the outline with a soft pencil and cut the rest from tape to the drawn shape. It is not an ideal solution, but it is still faster than measuring the whole cockpit from scratch.
