A set for the American escort fighter with the teardrop canopy. It contains masking of the glazing from both faces, three stencils for the national insignia and decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
A cut-down rear fuselage and a one-piece teardrop canopy gave the pilot a view the previous versions did not have. A third pair of machine guns was added to that, on the later batches a dorsal fillet ahead of the fin and above all a range that allowed bombers to be escorted deep into Germany. Most of the machines flew in unpainted metal.
The teardrop glazing has practically no framing; apart from the windscreen it is a single clear molding. Even a beginner can mask it with tape in twenty minutes, so the saving of time is negligible. The real value of the box lies in the three stencils for the national insignia.
An unpainted duralumin surface reflects light more than any matte camouflage, and it is precisely on it that the rim of an applied insignia is apparent from every angle. A sprayed star with bars does not have that shortcoming and it moves a model closer to a photograph at once.
Metallic paints are delicate about peeling. Lay the film on as soon as possible after drying, press down only its edge and lift it slowly at a shallow angle. Anyone who leaves a stencil lying on metal overnight risks tearing the sheen of the base away with it. The remaining inscriptions and numbers are covered by the decal sheet enclosed. Before you use the sheet, look at its condition. Older prints grow brittle and crack when moved; a short bath in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent brings them back into shape and the film then seats even on riveted seams without air bubbles.
