Three stencils for the French roundel on the SPAD fighter in 1:32 scale. The cut matches the Roden kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The French roundel uses the same three colors as the British one, but puts them together the other way round: in the middle lies blue, around it a white ring and the outer ring is red. For a modeler that is the commonest source of error, because the two markings look identical in a black and white photograph and only knowing the unit tells them apart. The same rule applied to the vertical stripes on the rudder, where the order of the colors was likewise swapped against British practice.
The SPAD of the seventh series was given a liquid-cooled Hispano-Suiza V engine and a single fixed barrel firing through the propeller. It was not as agile as the Nieuports of the day, but it stood up to a steep descent and in a fight decided by speed it was far safer, because its wings did not break. Alongside the French escadrilles it was taken over by the British, the Italians, the Russians and the Belgians, and in many units it served to the end of the war.
The roundel is made up of three concentric rings, so it is sprayed in several steps and between them the paint has to become tacky. Inside there are three stencils for the markings and nothing else; you will not find paints or the model itself in the package.
The commonest mistake is impatience between the rings. If the second color is laid into a first that is still soft, both tear when the film is lifted off and it can only be put right by sanding the whole thing back. An hour of waiting is therefore a more sensible investment than an hour of repairs. It also helps to try the whole sequence first on a scrap of plastic with the same finish.
