A resin detailing set, not a model of an aircraft. It holds castings of the wheel chocks the US Navy used during the Second World War under the wheels of aircraft on ships' decks and at shore bases. The chocks were placed under the main wheels so that a machine with its engine running, or on a moving deck, would not roll away. In 1:32 scale they are prominent objects that place a standing model in its setting at once and give a scene scale and credibility.
Most kits hold no chocks at all and the modeler has either to make them or to buy them. A resin casting offers wood grain, rounded edges and wear that are hard to achieve by scratch-building in plastic. The set suits a standing model on a base, a deck scene, a diorama with ground crew, or simply as a small thing that gives a photograph of a finished model its context. The chocks were often linked by a rope or a chain, which you can add from modeling cord.
First wash the castings in warm soapy water to remove the mold release agent so that the paint takes hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a modeling saw, as resin is brittle and nippers easily chip a piece off a part. Sand it wet or with respiratory protection. Lay on a primer, then the base shade of wood or of the colored finish that was often used on naval equipment for better visibility. The wood grain stands out after a dry brush in a lighter tone and a fine wash in the recesses. Finally add wear on the edges and a light dust on the underside, as the chocks were constantly in contact with the deck.
This is a detailing set, not a model in its own right. Paints, glues and the base kit are not included in the package.
