It is the Astaco Neo double-arm working machine, that is a construction and rescue machine built on tracked running gear that carries two independently controlled arms instead of a single boom. The 1:35 scale is the same as the scale of military vehicles, so the model also serves well as a civilian element in a diorama.
Double-arm machines came about for work where one arm is not enough: one arm holds and steadies while the other cuts, crushes or takes material away at the same time. They find use in demolition, in sorting material and in clearing debris after natural disasters, where the work involves unstable and tangled structures. The operator controls each arm separately, which makes demands on the driver but speeds the work up markedly compared with a single-arm excavator. The Astaco Neo is one particular representative of this category, and among civilian machines it looks highly unusual, which makes it a rewarding modeling subject.
Build, spray and weather the tracked running gear before you join it to the superstructure, as otherwise you will not reach the space between the tracks and the frame. A working machine will take pronounced weathering: mud and dust effects on the running gear, worn paint on the edges of the arms and glossy metal surfaces where material rubs against material. The hydraulic rams look best when the polished part is left genuinely metallic, for instance with a piece of chrome foil or a well-polished metallic paint. Deal with the cab and the glazing before closing the superstructure up, and apply the decals with the safety markings over a gloss base, so that no visible film is left.
