About product

M113A1 with the T50 turret in 1:35 scale from AFV Club

The kit captures the M113A1 tracked armored personnel carrier in Australian army configuration, with a small manned T50 turret added. The turret is the main distinguishing feature: the ordinary M113 carries only an open ring mount for a machine gun, whereas this conversion gives the gunner an enclosed station with traverse all the way round. The exact contents of the package are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The M113 is an aluminum tracked armored personnel carrier and one of the most widespread armored vehicles of all — it was built in enormous numbers and armies of dozens of countries used it in the most varied conversions. The M113A1 version brought a diesel engine in place of the original gasoline unit. The Australian army added the T50 turret to its carriers, a small two-man structure with two machine guns of different calibers, thanks to which the vehicle gained markedly more firepower than the standard version with an open machine gun station. This look is typical of Australian carriers and tells them apart from American machines at a glance.

Building and painting tips

Finish the running gear and the suspension before you close the hull — there is little room under the sponsons later. Build and paint the turret separately and fit it only to the finished model. Stowage counts for a lot on a carrier: rolled tarpaulins, boxes, jerricans and the crew's personal belongings on the roof give the model life and break up the large smooth area. Layer the basic green shade with modulation, bring up the edges with a dry brush and load the underside and the tracks with mud and dust. It is rewarding to leave the rear ramp open and suggest the interior, but then count on the inside having to be finished before the hull is closed.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Australian and Allied vehicles.
  • Modelers who want a less usual variant of a widespread carrier.
  • Builders of dioramas with infantry dismounting.
  • Anyone interested in tracked vehicles with a simple but rewarding build.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The main difference is the enclosed T50 turret instead of an open machine gun station. The vehicle thus has a protected gunner's station and a different silhouette.

The extent of the interior is given in the manufacturer's instructions. If you want to leave the rear ramp open, go through them before you start building.

The number of color schemes is stated on the box and in the assembly instructions.
