About product

17-pounder barrel for the Archer self-propelled gun 1:35 – Aber

This turned metal barrel from the Polish maker Aber in 1:35 scale replaces the plastic barrel part of the British Archer self-propelled anti-tank gun. The machined metal part has no seam from the mold parting line, it keeps an exact circular cross section and the muzzle is drilled out, so the long slender barrel looks more faithful and does not warp. The set is an accessory to the kit and does not hold the model of the vehicle.

The real subject

The Archer was a British self-propelled anti-tank gun of the Second World War built on the chassis of the Valentine infantry tank. Its most striking feature was the placing of the 17-pounder gun in an open superstructure facing backwards, so that the vehicle fired over its rear. This unusual solution made it possible to fit a long, heavy weapon into a relatively small chassis and at the same time made a quick withdrawal from the firing position easier. The 17-pounder gun was among the most effective Allied anti-tank weapons.

Building and painting tips

The turned barrel is fitted in place of the plastic part, which usually has to be cut off, and the hole in the mantlet or shield carefully opened out with a round file. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue or two-part epoxy, and on heavier parts it is worth reinforcing the joint. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer, otherwise the paint holds badly. We recommend blackening the muzzle and knocking back the inside to a matte finish; the outer surface takes light drybrushing with a metallic pigment and some wear at the muzzle.

FAQ

No. It is a turned metal barrel, that is a detail accessory. The base kit of the vehicle has to be obtained separately.

The long 17-pounder gun was turned over the rear of the vehicle in an open superstructure. That let the designers fit a large weapon into a small chassis, and the crew could leave the position quickly after firing.

A turned barrel has no seam from the mold, it is perfectly straight, it has a properly circular cross section and a drilled muzzle. That does away with sanding and filling the joint.

It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy. Before painting, the metal has to be degreased and sprayed with a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.
