This blank of a tree trunk 15 centimeters tall from the manufacturer MAiM, variant number 1, is the basis from which you build a tree of your own exactly as the scene needs it. A tree is one of the hardest disciplines in a diorama, because finished pieces rarely suit a composition, whereas a trunk blank leaves you free to decide the shape of the crown, the foliage and the degree of damage for yourself. It is listed for 1:35 scale, where 15 cm matches a mature tree.
A mature tree is a natural vertical focal point: it breaks the monotony of a flat base, frames vehicles and gives a scene a third dimension. The trunk can be used in a landscape scene, by a country lane, in a shattered avenue or in a town park. In a wartime subject a damaged tree works strikingly as well, and the blank only has to be reworked, broken off and given cracks. Variant number 1 differs in shape from variant number 2 of the same range, so a small avenue can be put together without repetition.
Prime the surface of the trunk and paint it by layering gray-brown tones, because real bark is not brown but grayish with transitions of color; washes will bring out the grooves and a dry brush will pull the texture out. Build the crown up with wired branches, sea foam or ready-made leafed twigs and foliage. At the foot of the trunk do not forget the root flares sunk into the terrain material, because a tree stuck into a base gives any scene away.
The blank is supplied raw, meant to be reworked, painted and finished with a crown. Foliage, paints and binders are not included in the package.
