An injection-molded plastic kit of the Cierva C.30 autogyro in 1:35 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer MiniArt. The package corresponds to the version with a winter ski undercarriage, that is to a machine adapted for operating from snow-covered surfaces. An autogyro is not a helicopter: its rotor is driven round in flight by the airflow and the thrust comes from an ordinary propeller, so the machine cannot hover on the spot but manages a very short takeoff and a steep landing.
The Cierva C.30 is among the best known autogyros of the 1930s. The design grew out of the work of the Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva and the machine was also built under license, among other places in Great Britain. It was a two-seat aircraft with open cockpits, a radial engine and a lifting rotor mounted on a pylon above the fuselage. Autogyros found use in the liaison and observation roles and in civil operation, and they became an important stepping stone toward the later helicopters.
The most demanding part is the strut and wire structure of the rotor pylon and the rotor, and it is best completed with stretched filament only after painting. Glue the rotor blades with their angle in mind and let them cure in a jig so that they are not twisted. Open cockpits mean the interior will be visible, so finish and paint it before closing the fuselage up. On the skis, knock the gloss back and add restrained traces of snow and mud only where there was real contact with the ground.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
