About product

1:35 A commanding officer standing, a US infantry squad for the M1126 Stryker (CMK)

A resin figure in 1:35 scale from the maker CMK. The figure is specified as a standing commanding officer, which within a group makes it something other than the kneeling figures of the same range: a standing figure determines the height of the whole scene and naturally draws the eye. That is precisely why it is not stood in the middle of a group but in the place from which it holds the composition, typically at the rear ramp of the M1126 Stryker wheeled carrier or a step to one side of the kneeling figures.

The casting and the stability of a standing figure

The casting comes on a casting block, which with a standing figure tends to be under the feet. First wash the part in lukewarm water with detergent because of the mold release agent. Cut the block off with a fine-toothed saw and level the surface under the feet on abrasive paper laid on a flat board, because even a small remnant of the stub will tilt the figure. Scrape the parting line along the outer sides of the legs and arms and across the rim of the helmet with the edge of a scalpel. With a standing figure, count moreover on it being visible from all sides, so cleaning up the back and the back of the legs cannot be skimped. Stability is solved by a wire pin: drill through the foot with a fine drill, glue in a piece of wire and push that into the base. A tall figure glued only by the area of the feet will sooner or later get knocked off. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue).

Painting a whole group from one batch

This figure most often stands beside further figures of the same range, and nothing betrays an amateur procedure faster than three different shades of uniform in one group. Mix the base shade, therefore, in a larger quantity, close it into a bottle and paint all the figures from the same batch. Then distinguish them only by what is legitimate, that is by skin tone, degree of fading and dirtiness. A standing figure is visible through 360 degrees, so pull the folds out with a thin glaze at the back as well and go over the edges of the pockets and straps with a dry brush around the whole circumference. With an officer it is the face and the gesture of the hand that carry the expression, so give them skin in three steps and suggest the eyes with a dark line under a magnifier. Tying in with the scene is done from the bottom: the boots and the hems of the trousers get an earthy tint matching the terrain, while the chest and head stay clean. Finish with matte clear coat.

Who the figure is for

  • Builders of the M1126 Stryker wheeled carrier in 1:35 scale
  • Diorama makers whose group of kneeling figures lacks a vertical
  • Modelers putting together a whole infantry squad from figures of the same range
  • Anyone interested in painting a standing figure visible from all sides

The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted as a resin casting. Glue, paints and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Not in the middle of a group but in the place from which it holds the composition, typically at the rear ramp of the vehicle or a step to one side of the kneeling figures. A standing figure is the highest point of a scene and naturally draws the eye.

Drill through the foot with a fine drill, glue a piece of wire into the hole and push that into the base. A joint glued only by the area of the feet will sooner or later give way with a standing figure, especially while a finished scene is being handled.

Mix the base shade in a larger quantity at one go and paint all the figures from the same batch. Then distinguish the individual figures only by skin tone, degree of fading and dirtiness, not by a different base shade.

Yes. A standing figure is visible through 360 degrees in a display case, so the folds have to be pulled out with a glaze at the back too and the edges of the pockets and straps gone over with a dry brush around the whole circumference, otherwise the scene looks unfinished from one side.
