Aber – a turned metal barrel for the German 7.5 cm Pak 40 anti-tank gun, late version, 1:35 is a replacement part for a kit, not a standalone model. It replaces the plastic barrel with a part of a perfectly circular section and a drilled-out muzzle.

This is neither a gun kit nor a complete model. It is a single replacement part: a barrel produced by machining on a lathe, which a modeler uses instead of the plastic barrel from the box. The manufacturer is the Polish company Aber, which has long specialized in turned barrels and fine accessories for 1:35 scale. The late version label refers to the later production form of the weapon; check the particular differences in shape against the earlier version before buying, because they vary between production series.
The Pak 40 was a German anti-tank gun of 7.5 cm caliber used during the Second World War. It was a gun on a wheeled split-trail carriage, with a long barrel and a muzzle brake; its barrel also appears as the armament of a number of tracked carriers and tank destroyers. It is precisely the long slender barrel with the brake that is the most conspicuous feature on a model, which is why the quality of the workmanship shows on it most.
A plastic barrel is made of two halves, so a mold seam always remains on it and has to be sanded down, and in sanding the roundness is easily spoiled. A turned metal part has no seam, is precisely cylindrical along its whole length and the muzzle is usually drilled out, so it does not look blanked off. Metal moreover takes handling and does not deform.
Cut the plastic barrel off at the point where it meets the breech and level the surface with a file. Bond the metal part with super glue or a two-part epoxy; ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal. Degrease the metal with alcohol or detergent before painting and apply a primer intended for metal, otherwise the paint cracks and peels. We recommend picking out the muzzle of the barrel and the brake gently at the end with a dark shade or with graphite.
