The plastic kit in 1:35 scale captures a vehicle built on the so-called unified chassis, which was to standardize the production of vehicles derived from the Pz.Kpfw. III and Pz.Kpfw. IV types. The maker is Hobby Boss. The model is supplied as a classic injection-molded kit; the contents of the package and the number of parts are given in the instructions inside the box.
The designation Einheitsfahrgestell, that is unified chassis, describes the effort to simplify wartime production by putting various superstructures on one common running gear. The designers drew on components of both established medium tanks and combined them into a single platform: the running gear, the gearbox and the engine section were to be shared, and only the upper part of the vehicle was to change. The practical aim was to shorten production time and to simplify the supply of spare parts. A number of vehicles conceived this way got no further than a prototype or a project, which is also why they are an interesting subject for modelers today — other variants of the same chassis, differing in the superstructure, are released separately as well.
Try the running gear dry first: the road wheels, the return rollers and the idlers have to sit in one plane, otherwise the model will not stand straight on its base. Assemble and fit the tracks before you varnish the hull, so that you do not have to get a brush into tight places later. Glue with thin cement for polystyrene, sand the seams and cover the whole model with primer before painting. Apply the paint with an airbrush in thin layers, a dark wash will bring out the rivets and the production seams, and dust pigments on the running gear and the lower hull will give the vehicle a sense of scale. If you are building the vehicle for a display case without a base, hinting at dust is enough; a diorama calls for more pronounced mud.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
