About product

Wehrmacht jerrycans, Nowack Bautzen, 1939 pattern, open - 1:35, ten pieces

The package holds ten miniatures of the German standard twenty-liter jerrycan in 1:35 scale, this time with the closure flipped open. The castings carry the pressed mark of the Nowack works of Bautzen and correspond to the version after the pattern of 1939. It is not a model of a vehicle and not a kit: it is an accessory that brings a vehicle already built and a diorama scene to life.

The real subject

The standard can of the German army differed from older sheet metal containers in that it could be handled without tools: the closure was secured by a folding lever, so a soldier opened the container with one hand. Three handles side by side made it possible to carry one can with two men or two cans with one, and the pressed crosses on the sides stiffened the shell. The containers were pressed by several works at once and each used its own mark; by that and by the year of the pattern the individual versions are told apart today.

Use, building and painting

Separate the castings carefully with a sharp scalpel or cutting pliers and sand the area of the cut. With resin and 3D printed parts it is good to wash them before painting in lukewarm water with dish soap and to glue them with super glue; injection-molded plastic takes ordinary thin modeling cement. The open variant is intended for scenes where refueling or pouring is going on: a can set on a fender, leaned against a wheel, in the hands of a figure. Around the neck it pays to suggest a darker scuff and traces of fuel, while on the shell a wash and a dry brush come into their own.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of German Second World War vehicles in 1:35 scale.
  • Makers of dioramas with a refueling or resupply scene.
  • Those who want to combine open and closed containers on a model and give the scene movement.
  • Anyone who needs a larger number of identical containers at once.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a fitting, ten small jerrycans that you add to a finished model or to a diorama.

It suits scenes where fuel is being poured. On a model set down at rest the closed variant looks more natural.

According to the name, ten pieces. Further details of the contents are stated on the box of the set.

The simplest way is to spray them in the same color as the vehicle, go over them with a dark wash and bring out the pressed crosses and the edges with a dry brush.
