This is a resin figure in 1:35 scale from the Aerobonus brand, which is the figure line from Aires. It is not a kit of a vessel or a vehicle, but a separate accessory with which an already built model of the Japanese Kaiten II manned torpedo is brought to life. A figure gives a scene its scale and naturally draws the eye, which helps a great deal on a model with a smooth cigar-shaped hull.
Resin is cast in silicone molds, so the surface carries finer detail than injection-molded plastic: legible folds of the clothing, crisp edges on the kit and modeling of the face. The parts are held on casting blocks that have to be cut off with a fine saw or a cutter, with the surface trued up with a file and abrasive paper. Before gluing, wash the casting in lukewarm water with detergent, so that release agent residue from the mold disappears from it, otherwise the paint will not hold. It is glued with cyanoacrylate; ordinary cement for plastic does not work on resin. Use respiratory protection while sanding.
The figure is cast in one fixed pose and cannot be bent, so try it dry exactly in the place where you want to seat it before gluing, and rework the surface under the feet if need be. It is painted like any other figure: first a thin primer, which evens the surface out and gives the paint adhesion, then the base tones of the uniform and the skin, and finally the shading. An acrylic base supplemented with oils or a dark wash into the recesses proves itself, because in a small scale legibility rests mainly on the contrast between a fold and the crest of the cloth. Finish the eyes and the small details with a fine brush at the very end and even the surface out with matte varnish.
The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
