About product

Eduard 1:35 King Tiger Porsche fenders — photo-etched fenders

A set of photo-etched parts from the Czech maker Eduard intended for completing a plastic model of the Tiger II heavy tank with the so-called Porsche turret in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the tank but an accessory: thin stainless steel sheet replaces the chunky plastic fenders, which can never match the real sheet thickness of the subject. The difference is visible at first glance, especially on the edges and in the places where the fenders are damaged or folded up.

The real subject

The Tiger II, in German Königstiger and in English-language literature the King Tiger, was a German heavy tank of the closing stage of the Second World War. The first production vehicles carried a turret with a curved front plate, for which the term Porsche turret became established after the original competing chassis concept. The fenders above the running gear on these vehicles were made of thin sheet and were removable; in field conditions they were often bent, torn or missing altogether. That is exactly why they are a rewarding place to add realism to a model quickly.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts from the fret with sharp photo-etch scissors and make the bends in a photo-etch bender or on a metal ruler. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; on larger areas the gel version with a longer setting time helps. Degrease the metal before painting and apply a good primer for metal surfaces, otherwise the paint holds badly. Thin sheet is easy to curl or crumple, so service damage can be suggested faithfully; the washes and pigments that follow for mud and dust effects then show up considerably better than on a plastic part.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the Tiger II with the Porsche turret in 1:35 scale
  • anyone interested in field damage and the patina of German equipment
  • builders with at least basic experience of photo-etched parts
  • collectors who are bothered by unrealistically thick plastic fenders

It is not a kit of the tank but an accessory set. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of photo-etched parts for completing a plastic model you have already bought. The model itself is not included in the package.

Metal will not bond to plastic with modeling cement for plastic. Use cyanoacrylate glue, and on larger areas the gel version, which gives more time to seat the part.

Yes. Degrease the metal sheet and apply a primer intended for metal. Only then will the paint and the patina that follows hold reliably.

Fenders are among the simpler photo-etched parts, but bending and gluing them calls for calm and ideally a photo-etch bender. A complete beginner should try the procedure on offcuts of the fret first.
