The end of September, when one and the same tree still holds green on the south side, is yellowing in the middle and is already burning red at the top. Among our trees the maple is the most striking in this, and the extended range of colors exists precisely so that the turn can be shown on a model. The tree then works not as a colored object but as a living organism caught in a particular week.
A maple leaf is recognized at once by its palmate shape with five lobes and deep notches. It is the largest of the leaves diorama builders use, so it works well even singly — one caught on a fender or stuck to the wet boot of a figure is a detail everybody notices.
How to mix the colors: not evenly. Autumn advances from the top and from the edges of a crown, so the darkest tones belong at the top and on the sunny side, whereas the shaded inner areas stay green longest. Mix all the shades together and sprinkle them at once and you get a blotchy tree with no order to it.
The transition to the ground: beneath a maple there should lie leaves of the same shades as the crown above it, only shifted a step. Fallen leaves tend to be darker and more faded, because they have lain longer. This inconspicuous difference between crown and ground is what sets a considered diorama apart from a quickly assembled scene.
The range can be used where there is no tree at all. A few maple leaves laid on a heap of rubble, on the hood of a parked vehicle or in the corner of a stairway will suggest that a scene takes place in autumn, without a whole crown having to be built. It is the simplest way to fix the season of a view.
