About product

Quickwheel 1:35 M1 Abrams — road wheel masks for the Panda Hobby PH-35030 kit

A masking set for painting the road wheels of the American M1 Abrams main battle tank in 1:35 scale. It is not a model: the masks stick onto finished wheels and separate the rubber tire band from the rim while spraying. The set is cut for the M1 Abrams kit from Panda Hobby, specifically the PH-35030.

What makes the running gear of the Abrams special

The Abrams has seven road wheels on each side, more than most tanks of its generation, and return rollers to go with them, over which the upper run of the track travels. The wheels are dual, with rubber tire bands and a rim whose pattern is pronounced from the side. The whole running gear is covered by side armor plates reaching along the entire length of the hull, so roughly the lower third of it stays visible — but in a markedly long, continuous band. That is what counts for painting: it is not a matter of one conspicuous wheel but of seven arcs in a row, where every mismatch in the width or the shade of the rubber adds up into a disturbing rhythm. The drive sprocket is at the rear, the idler wheel at the front, and both have a different shape from the road discs.

Choosing and preparing the paint

On the Abrams it pays to think about sheen in advance. The rubber should be matte in principle, except that on a model in a desert or gray-green finish a wash to pick out detail is almost always applied, and on a matte surface it does not flow but soaks in and makes blotches. The proven routine is therefore in three steps: paint the rubber in thin coats, go over the whole running gear with a light satin varnish, let the wash run into the recesses of the rim and only at the end unify everything with matte varnish. Choose a medium gray rubber shade with no warm cast; across seven wheels in a row any brown tone strengthens into an impression of rust. Thin the paint so that it passes the nozzle easily and never rely on one covering coat.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of modern American armored equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Builders bothered by an inconsistent rhythm across seven wheels in a row
  • Those who use a wash on the running gear and have to order the matte and satin varnishes
  • Modelers working with an airbrush

This is a masking set, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

For the M1 Abrams from Panda Hobby, specifically the PH-35030. With a kit from another brand, compare the wheel diameter and the width of the rubber tire band beforehand.

Matte in the end. If you are putting a wash on the running gear, though, lay down a light satin first, let the wash run and only then unify everything with matte varnish, or the wash will blotch on a matte surface.

Seven wheels per side create a long regular rhythm. Every deviation in the width of the rubber adds up in such a row and is more conspicuous than on a tank with four or five wheels.

A medium gray with no warm cast. Brown tones add up across seven wheels in a row into an impression of rust, which looks out of place on modern equipment.
