This set from Artwox Model is an accessory, not a model. It is bought for a plastic kit of a German destroyer of the Z class in 1:700 scale and it replaces the plastic deck with a thin wooden veneer with the laying of the planks printed on it and with a self-adhesive back. On so small a vessel the ratio of the deck to the total area of the model is high, so the change tells at once as soon as you put the model in a display case.
The destroyers of the Z class were the main category of German destroyers of the Second World War. They were relatively large vessels with gun armament at the bow and the stern, torpedo tubes on the midship deck and equipment for minelaying. They were deployed on escort, patrol and mining tasks. For building a model what matters above all is that they have a long unbroken deck with several islands of superstructures, around which the veneer has to seat precisely.
A small deck forgives less than a large one. Before you reach for the film, lay the veneer on dry and check all the cutouts against the parts of the kit, above all at the bases of the gun shields and the torpedo tubes. Do any trimming with a new blade and several light passes, as one heavy pass will fray the veneer. Sand the plastic under the veneer and degrease it, or the edges will lift in time. Once it is glued on, let the model rest and only then finish the superstructures, so as not to sink tweezers into a freshly laid deck. Minimal painting is enough, a dark wash into the gaps and matte varnish, which will protect the veneer.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
