A masking sheet for the road wheels of the M26 Pershing medium tank in 1:35 scale. It is neither a model nor a replacement part; it is an aid that separates the rubber tire band from the rim during painting. The cutouts are cut for the wheels from the Hobby Boss kit.
A hand does not rotate about an axis, a hand pulls arcs. When you line a tire band with a brush, you assemble the circle out of several short strokes, and a microscopic kink appears at every join. The pressure on the brush changes at the same time, so the line thickens here and thins there, and the mark is unevenly wide all the way around. Add to that the fact that you hold the wheel in your fingers and the viewing angle shifts with every turn, and it is clear why the result, seen from the side, looks more like a polygon with an uneven outline than like a circle. The eye spots that deviation even when it cannot name it. The mask gets around the problem because the border is defined not by the movement of your hand but by the cutout itself, which is circular regardless of how firmly you hold the wheel.
Clean the wheels first and remove the molding seams. Paint the rim, lay the mask on once it has dried and spray the tire band color in several thin coats. Avoid a heavy deposit at the edge, because that is exactly where the paint bleeds under most easily. Remove the mask while the paint has only flashed off, and burnish any overrun with the tip of a toothpick instead of repainting.
