In the winter at the turn of 1944 and 1945 American vehicles in the Ardennes were given a hasty white finish. It was no factory work: lime, chalk or thinned paint was mixed and applied with a broom, a rag, whatever was at hand. That is precisely why a winter machine looks the way it does, that is uneven, with streaks and with places where the original olive drab shows through. And it is precisely why the crews tried to leave the national insignia clear, so that their own airmen would recognize the vehicle.
A model is done from the bottom up: the base green, the insignia from a stencil onto it, then a gloss coat and only at the end the winter layer, which can be wiped away in places or etched with thinner. An insignia painted under a mask survives that treatment, because it is sealed in the paint. A sticker would begin to swell at that moment and its edge would give away that it lies on the surface. A pair of insignia sheets and wheel discs are stated for these goods, so there is something to build on.
The designation E8 means the new suspension with horizontal springs and paired wheels, on which the tank stood markedly more stably and could carry a wider track. That was valued most in winter terrain, because it was exactly the width of the track that decided whether the machine would move through churned snow or sink into it. There are twice as many wheels on each side and a masking sheet genuinely saves a lot of minutes here. The suspension also holds the wheels closer together, so barely a few tenths of a millimeter of free space is left between them. Anyone who has tried outlining that by hand knows that the brush touches the neighboring disc before it gets halfway round the perimeter, and you start again.
