A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the M60 tank and its Israeli version, the Magach 6B, in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit or a replacement part, but an aid for the painting stage: the mask covers the rim and you spray the tire band on its own. The set is cut for the kit from Meng.
The Magach 6B derives from the standard M60, so it shares its torsion bar suspension, its individually sprung wheels with a dished pressed rim and a wide rubber tire band, and the return rollers above them. The difference lies in what goes on around the running gear. The Israeli version carries add-on armor and side plates on the flanks of the hull, so less of the running gear is seen than on the base M60 — all the more reason for the visible strip to be faultless. It also means you have to have the wheels painted before you fit the side parts; an airbrush can no longer reach sensibly under a plate. The drive sprocket and the idler wheel have no rubber tire band and the masks do not belong on them. Because one set covers the M60 and the Magach alike, it suits builders preparing both subjects side by side.
When you are building two vehicles at once, divide and label the set of wheels from the start, or they will get mixed and the difference in shade will then show on precisely that narrow strip under the plate. Spike the wheels on skewers pushed into a polystyrene board and keep the individual machines in separate rows. Lift a mask off the sheet with a needle, transfer it with fine-tipped tweezers and press it down around the circumference with a blunt toothpick; before spraying, go over everything through a magnifier with side lighting. Apply the paint square to the rim, in thin coats and with the same number of passes. Lift the masks off at a slant across the surface, while the paint is not yet fully cured.
