The sheet from ETA diorama belongs among the printed paper accessories meant for rounding a scene out. You do not get plastic parts or decals transferred with water, but printed paper from which you cut the individual motifs out yourself and fit them into a diorama. Pirate flags suit naval and adventure scenes, models of sailing ships and harbor piers as well as fantasy and gaming displays where a flag has to carry the character of the whole composition.
Cut the flag out with sharp scissors or a scalpel following the rhythm of the printing and leave a minimal margin at the edges. Dampen the paper with a brush dipped in heavily thinned PVA glue and shape it over wire or a stretched thread into a limp or wind-blown form – while it is damp it holds the shape by itself and once dry it stiffens. A natural sag is precisely what decides whether a flag looks like fabric in a scene or like paper. For a view from both sides, glue two cut-out motifs back to back, so that the white reverse does not show.
Go over the white cut edges with a shade matching the field of the printing – tempera or acrylic paint applied with a dry brush is enough. Age is added by a light hint of pigment in the lighter areas and gentle rubbing of the edges, or by a small tear in the margin. Spray the finished flag with matte clear coat in a thin layer: it unifies the sheen of the printing with its surroundings and at the same time strengthens the paper against moisture. Apply paints only once it is sealed, as the printing is otherwise prone to bleeding.
