Quarter-turn quick-release fasteners. Miniatures of the catches that hold the fairing and service covers on racing machines.
Responsibility details are not available.
The designation in the name refers to an American brand of quick-release fasteners whose name has become so generic that it is used today as a generic term. The principle differs from that of a bolt: the spigot is pressed in and turned a quarter turn, whereupon a cross stop engages a spring collar under the panel. The panel holds firmly and yet comes off in two seconds.
From aviation. On the service covers of aircraft it was necessary to open panels quickly and without losing the hardware, and the designers of racing cars and circuit motorcycles later appreciated the same thing. On a model you will recognize them by a shallow circular head with one bold slot or a cross, usually sunk into the surface of the fairing.
Around the perimeter of a removable fairing, around service caps and on the seat cover. Choose regular spacing, because real panels have their fasteners laid out by calculation, not at random. And watch one thing: a fastener belongs only where the panel really does come off. Scattered over the whole machine it gives away that the builder was merely filling the surface.
Installation is simpler than it seems: the head sits low, so a shallow recess and a drop of glue are enough. The layout, on the other hand, should be marked out with a pencil in advance and checked against a photograph of the subject, because a row of fasteners that has shifted is visible on a smooth fairing at first glance.
