An injection-molded plastic kit of a Chinese medium tank in 1:35 scale, that is in the most widespread scale for ground vehicles. The model is supplied on sprues, unassembled and unpainted; the parts have to be nipped off, cleaned up and glued with cement for polystyrene. The contents of the package, that is the number of parts, the type of tracks and the presence of photo-etched parts or decal sheets, are given in the instructions supplied.
The Type 59 was a Chinese medium tank based on the Soviet T-54A; it followed the classic concept of a postwar medium tank with a cast dome-shaped turret, suspension with large road wheels and no return rollers, and a 100 mm gun. The 59-1 variant represents a later stage of development of this line, with modifications to the fire control and the equipment. The particular technical changes of the individual sub-versions are given differently in the literature; what matters for a build is that in shape it is the silhouette typical of this family of tanks.
On tanks of this concept the running gear is crucial: fit the road wheels dry and check that they lie in one plane, as otherwise the model will not stand level once the tracks are on. Finish and paint the tracks before the fenders are glued on, as you will reach them better then. A cast turret deserves a surface texture: light stippling with a brush loaded with a thicker thinner, or a thin layer of filler, creates the characteristic slightly rough casting. Handle the painting from a darker base, applying the flat color lightened in the middle of the large areas, so that the model does not look flat. At the end, bring out the rivets and the pressings with a thinned wash and dust the lower areas and the fenders with pigments.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
