A set of self-adhesive masks for painting the road wheels of the Soviet 2S1 self-propelled howitzer in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit or an extra part — the masks merely cover part of the wheel so the rubber and the rim can be sprayed separately and with a sharp border. The set is cut for the kit from Trumpeter; with a kit from another manufacturer the wheels may have a different diameter and a different rim depth, so check that this is the model you are building.
The running gear of the 2S1 derives from an amphibious tracked chassis, and that is the essential thing about it: there are seven road wheels on each side and no return rollers, with the upper run of the track bearing directly on the wheels. Seven wheels per side side by side means very narrow gaps — a brush can barely be maneuvered between the individual wheels, and that is exactly the situation in which lining by hand ends in a smear on the neighboring wheel. The wheels are also of light construction for the sake of buoyancy, so they have a markedly divided rim on which every overrun of paint shows. The drive sprocket is at the front, the idler wheel at the rear.
On a vehicle with seven wheels per side the small inaccuracies add up: fourteen hand-lined tire bands mean fourteen lines of differing width. The second typical mistake is painting the wheels once they are already glued to the hull — there is no room between them and neither a brush nor the nozzle of an airbrush gets into the gaps. The third is impatience when sticking the mask down: lay it on without pressing it all the way around and paint bleeds under the edge, leaving the border ragged. A mask will not abolish those problems for you, but it moves them out of the realm of a steady hand and into the realm of careful preparation — and that is repeatable.
