About product

Photo-etched set Sd.Kfz.186 Jagdtiger in 1:35 scale

This package holds no model of the vehicle. In it are photo-etched parts from thin metal sheet with which the modeler supplements or replaces components of the plastic kit of the Jagdtiger heavy tank destroyer in 1:35 scale. On military hardware photo-etch is used above all where the real thing was made of thin sheet: covers, grilles, brackets, consoles or straps. Plastic in such places never comes out thin in scale, because a mold needs a certain minimum thickness. The manufacturer is Eduard, a Czech brand from Obrnice near Most.

The real subject

The Sd.Kfz.186 Jagdtiger was a German heavy tank destroyer from the end of the Second World War. It was created on the lengthened chassis of the Tiger II heavy tank and carried a 128 mm gun in a fixed, heavily armored casemate without a rotating turret. The combination of weight and size made it the heaviest series-built tracked fighting vehicle of its day; only a few dozen were made. For a modeler it is marked by its tall box superstructure, massive fenders and long barrel.

Usage tips

On hardware, photo-etched parts are fitted in a different order than on aircraft: finish the hull and the running gear first and only then fit the thin metal additions, which would get in the way or bend during further handling. Cut the tabs with a scalpel and sand the burr. Metal grilles and covers read more realistically when you ripple them slightly or add small deformations, since the sheet on real hardware was rarely perfectly flat. Glue with super glue, and on larger areas with epoxy, which gives time to settle a part. Before painting, degrease the sheet and use a primer for metal; only then come the base shade, filters, a wash into the recesses and finally pigments for mud and dust effects, which come into their own precisely on the photo-etched grilles and around them.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Jagdtiger in 1:35 scale
  • Those who want thin metal covers and grilles instead of plastic moldings
  • Builders used to working with a scalpel, tweezers and super glue
  • Anyone interested in a model meant for weathering and for a diorama

The set is an accessory to a plastic kit. The model itself, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. These are only photo-etched metal parts. The Jagdtiger plastic kit in 1:35 scale has to be obtained separately.

On military hardware, typically only after the hull and the running gear are finished. Thin metal parts bend easily, so they should come as late as possible before painting.

A slight ripple and small irregularities help, because the sheet on real hardware was bent out of shape. After spraying, the grilles then stand out with a dark wash and pigments around them.

On larger flat parts it helps markedly, but it is not essential. The alternative is a fold between two razor blades or on the edge of a steel rule, always along the etched groove.
