A turned barrel for the 122 mm M-30 howitzer of the Soviet SU-122 self-propelled gun in 1:35 scale from Aber. A metal replacement for the plastic barrel, hollow muzzle included.
Responsibility details are not available.
A turned metal barrel in 1:35 scale from the Polish maker Aber for a model of the Soviet SU-122 self-propelled gun. It matches the 122 mm M-30 howitzer in its self-propelled form. This is a detail accessory, not a model of the vehicle. Metal allows sharper transitions, an accurate cylindrical shape and a hollow muzzle, which a plastic barrel never has unless it is drilled out.
The SU-122 was a Soviet self-propelled gun on the chassis of the T-34 medium tank, armed with a 122 mm howitzer in a fixed fighting superstructure. Unlike tank destroyers it was meant above all for direct fire support of infantry against fortifications and pockets of resistance, although it was also fired at armored vehicles. The short, heavy barrel with its prominent muzzle gives the vehicle an easily recognizable silhouette.
Cut off the plastic barrel, level the mating surface and open the hole in the mantlet out to the diameter of the metal part. Check dry before gluing that the barrel sits on the axis and does not sag. Degrease the metal and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue. Metal needs a primer for metal surfaces, and only then should the covering shade go on. The muzzle and the area around it can be picked out with a dark wash and a fine dusty pigment.
This is a detail set, not a complete model. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package.
