A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the German StuG III assault gun. It is an aid for painting, not a kit or a replacement part: on the wheel it marks out the rubber tire band against the rim. The set is cut for the Bronco kits with the designations CB35118, CB35117 and CB35116.
The StuG III uses the chassis of a medium tank and shares its running gear with it: six road wheels of medium diameter on each side, torsion bar suspension, three return rollers above, the drive sprocket at the front and the idler wheel at the rear. The wheels sit close together, so only narrow wedge-shaped gaps are left between them — and those are the problem when painting by hand: a brush gets into them with difficulty and the tire band division cannot be guided through them comfortably. The vehicle is also low and has no turret, so its side silhouette is largely made up of the track and the wheels; on an assault gun the running gear matters more to the view than on a tank, where the turret takes over the attention.
Six wheels in close line work as one visual whole. Either the division is sharp on all of them, and the running gear then holds together as a considered part of the model, or it blurs on one or two and the whole row looks careless. A mask solves that problem by setting the border for you, including in the places a brush reaches only with difficulty. On a shelf it shows in the view from the side at an ordinary distance; in a competition case it shows close up as well, when a judge looks precisely into the gaps between the wheels, because he knows that is where time is saved most often.
This is a modeling accessory, not a kit. Paints, glue and the model itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
