Wheel masking set 1:35 Tiger I (early version) from Quickwheel covers the hub of a road wheel and leaves only the rubber exposed, so that you can spray it in one go. The cut-outs are shaped for the wheels from the Dragon kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set belongs among modeling aids rather than kits. It consists of self-adhesive masks in the shape of the hub that are stuck in the middle of a road wheel. After spraying, the rubber stays separated in color from the hub and the edge between them is set by the cut of the mask rather than by a steady hand. The set is prepared for the wheels from the Dragon kit.
The transition between the rubber and the hub is one of the first places a person looks at on a finished model. A shaky, wavy boundary or one overrun in places gives brushwork away at first glance and pulls down the impression of the whole vehicle, even when the rest is built carefully. A continuous edge of the same width all the way round, by contrast, makes the wheel look as if it had come off the production line. That detail is exactly where the main benefit of the masks lies: the circle is geometrically accurate and the same on every wheel, which is never quite true by hand. On the early Tiger I it shows twice over, because there are many road wheels and they are seen side by side.
For the edge to come out properly, press the rim of the mask down with a fingernail or a wooden toothpick all the way round. Spray the paint thinner and in several light passes rather than in one heavy coat. Once the mask is off, look at the edge against the light; a small overrun can be corrected with the tip of a toothpick before the paint has fully hardened.
The package holds masking masks, not model parts. Paints, thinners and glue are not included.
