About product

Metal 90 mm gun barrel with a muzzle brake in 1:35 scale

A turned replacement barrel from the Polish maker Aber for a model of the American Pershing heavy tank in the version designated T26E3. It replaces the plastic barrel from the kit, which always has a lengthwise parting seam and rounded edges on the muzzle brake. It is an upgrade accessory, not a tank model.

What the replacement brings

Turned metal is perfectly round and straight, so the tedious removal of the seam falls away, and with it the risk that the barrel will be narrowed or waved while being sanded. The muzzle is drilled, so it is genuinely hollow, and the muzzle brake has sharp edges and open ports that cannot be molded in plastic. A metal barrel is also stiffer: it does not bend under its own weight or with heat, and on a long barrel that shows. The result is a detail that even a layman sees from the other side of the display case.

The real subject

The Pershing was an American heavy tank of the end of the Second World War, armed with a 90 mm gun derived from an anti-aircraft gun. The designation T26E3 belonged to the machines from pre-production, with which the type went into action in Europe in 1945 and which differ in detail from the later production vehicles. The characteristic feature of the barrel is precisely the two-chamber muzzle brake.

Tips for working it

Degrease the metal part with alcohol or a degreaser before work. If the barrel is made up of several pieces, join them with super glue and check the joint against the light so that the axis is straight. The barrel often simply slides into the seat in the turret: try the fit dry and, if necessary, open the hole in the plastic carefully with a round file, never by force. Apply a primer made for metal before painting; only on that will the top coat and the weathering that follows hold. Darken the inside of the muzzle and dirty the area around the muzzle brake sparingly with soot.

Who it is for

  • Builders of American armor in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who replace plastic barrels with metal ones
  • Contest builders, where detail decides
  • Anyone who does not want to spend time sanding the seam off a barrel

This is an accessory for a kit, not a tank model. It is supplied unpainted and without the vehicle model.

FAQ

A plastic barrel always has a lengthwise seam and a solid or inaccurate muzzle. Turned metal is perfectly round, the muzzle is drilled and the edges of the muzzle brake are sharp.

Usually it is enough to cut off the original plastic barrel and slide the new one into the seat in the turret. Always try the fit dry first and, if necessary, open the hole carefully.

After degreasing with alcohol, apply a primer made for metal and only then the top coat. Without a primer the surface rubs through when handled.

It is the pre-production version of the Pershing tank with which the type went into action in 1945. It differs in detail from the later production vehicles.
