A set of plastic figures of American tank crewmen in 1:35 scale from Tamiya. It captures a crew of the kind assigned to tanks in Europe after the Normandy landings. The set holds six figures: four complete ones and two half figures (torsos meant for the turret and the hatches). Accessories are included as well: a submachine gun, two types of ammunition box, clear goggles and decals with unit and rank markings. This is not a vehicle kit but an accessory for tank models.

The real subject

American tank crewmen in the Second World War wore essentially the same uniform as the infantry, with the addition of the characteristic tanker helmet and a short insulated jacket with narrow sleeves, adapted to the cramped space of a fighting vehicle. The poses of the figures capture typical crew situations, whether on the move or leaning out of the turret, and they suit American tanks of the European theater such as the Sherman in particular.

Building and painting tips

Glue the figures with liquid cement for plastic, and sand and fill the mold seams carefully. Paint from a muted base: build the flesh tone of the face and hands in layers toward the lighter areas, shade the uniform with a dark wash into the folds and bring out the edges of the cloth with a dry brush. Leave the clear goggles glossy and shade the metal accessories dark. The figures show best when set beside a tank model or in a vignette.
