A supplementary set from the manufacturer Very Fire with eight examples of the British 12.7 mm Vickers anti-aircraft machine gun in 1:350 scale. It is not a ship model but a detailing accessory: it replaces the simplified weapons from a basic kit with finer parts and suits models of British ships of the interwar and early war period. Without a basic kit it has no use of its own.
The 12.7 mm Vickers machine gun was an ordinary light anti-aircraft weapon of the Royal Navy in the 1930s. On ships it was mounted on platforms of the superstructures and bridges, where it was to cover the immediate surroundings of the vessel against low-flying aircraft. Compared with later automatic cannons its effect was limited, so during the Second World War it was gradually replaced by weapons of larger caliber. For a modeler it is a prominent detail: the small mountings on the platforms bring the silhouette of a ship to life and they show at once, because in plastic they tend to be simplified to an outline.
The parts are exceptionally small, so work under a magnifier, with a sharp scalpel or shears for fine parts and over a surface with a raised edge. Bend the photo-etched parts between two blades or on a bending tool, so that the edge is even; degrease and prime the metal parts before painting, otherwise the paint comes off them during handling. Paint the weapons while still on the fret or on a temporary holder and fit them only after the deck and the superstructures have been painted. Use cyanoacrylate glue applied with a piece of wire in minute doses; ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal parts. Watch that identical weapons point uniformly; mismatched angles look careless on a model.
The set is an accessory, not a model in its own right. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
