An injection-molded plastic kit of a tank landing ship of the US Navy in 1:350 scale from the Taiwanese manufacturer AFV Club. The abbreviation LST stands for Landing Ship, Tank, that is a landing ship intended for carrying and landing armored equipment. A sister kit of a ship of the LST-1 class is also made, so both forms can be built side by side. Check the exact number of parts, the extent of the sprues and the contents of the decal sheet on the packaging.
Tank landing ships were designed so that they could carry equipment across the open sea and land it directly on an unprepared beach with no need for a port. A flat bottom, a shallow draft and bow doors with a drop ramp allowed them to do so. The internal tank deck took armored vehicles and trucks, while the upper deck served for carrying further materiel and smaller craft. Ships of this type were built in large batches and differed in details of equipment, in the arrangement of the cranes and in the way smaller craft were launched; the LST-491 class is one of these production subgroups.
Decide at the very start whether you are building the full hull or the waterline variant on a sea base. The large flat areas of the hull sides call for careful sanding of the parting lines. Paint the deck and the superstructures separately and glue them only after the main spraying, otherwise masking is difficult. Fit the thin features, that is the railings, the cranes and the deck equipment, only at the end, so that they are not broken during handling. Build the weathering sparingly: mild running in the hollows of the deck and fine traces of corrosion on the sides look more convincing than an overpainted effect.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
