About product

Metal barrels 28 cm SK C/34, 1:350 scale (Flyhawk)

Turned metal barrels of the German naval gun of 28 cm caliber, roughly 11 inches in the imperial equivalent, with a barrel length of 54.5 calibers. The product belongs in the category of turned barrels and accessories for ship models, so it is an accessory with which the barrels of the main armament on a plastic kit in 1:350 are replaced. Metal brings a straight axis with no trace of the mold parting line and a drilled muzzle. On a barrel of this length, where the plastic part often comes out of the mold slightly bowed, the difference is clearly visible on a finished model.

The real subject

The 28 cm gun designated SK C/34 was part of the armament of large German surface vessels of the late 1930s. It was arranged in rotating turrets and formed the main caliber of the ship. A length of 54.5 calibers means that the barrel measured roughly fifty-five times its internal diameter, a figure that is given for naval guns together with the caliber and that also determines the final look of the part on a model.

Installation and painting

Cut the plastic barrel off right at the turret mask, level the area and open the hole out with a micro drill to the diameter of the pin on the metal part. Drill in several steps starting from a smaller diameter; that reduces the risk of tearing the wall. Glue the metal in with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy; cement for plastic will not help here. Fit the barrels only after the painting of the hull and superstructures is finished, so that they are not bent during handling. Degrease the parts before spraying and apply a primer for metal.

Who the set suits

  • Builders of German warship models in 1:350.
  • Modelers who want perfectly straight barrels of the main caliber.
  • Collectors finishing a model for a display case.
  • More experienced builders working with metal parts.

The set is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The number of pieces is not stated here. Please check the number before buying, so that you cover all the turrets of your model.

It is the length of the barrel expressed in multiples of the internal diameter. The barrel therefore measured roughly fifty-five times the 28 cm caliber.

Cut the plastic barrel off at the turret mask, open the hole out with a micro drill to the diameter of the pin and glue the metal part in with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy.

Yes. Degrease the metal and apply a primer for metal, ideally a self-etching one, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.
