A photo-etched set of parts for a model of the Lockheed F-104S Starfighter ASA in 1:48 scale. Thin sheet metal fills in the places where plastic is inevitably thicker than the real structure.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Starfighter is recognizable at first glance by its needle-like fuselage and short wing with a very sharp leading edge. The designation F-104S ASA belongs to the late form of this type; on a model the late machines differ from the earlier ones mainly in details of the cockpit, the bulges on the fuselage and the pylons.
The set is photo-etched, that is made by etching the outlines into thin sheet metal. Its parts have edges and a thickness that cannot be made by injection molding into plastic, and photo-etch is therefore used where a plastic part looks too bulky. Check the extent of the set and the kit it is intended for in the manufacturer's data.
The individual parts are joined to the fret by small tabs. Back the fret with a hard plate and cut the tab through with a sharp blade; once separated, sand the spot lightly so that no burr is left. Make the folds over the edge of a bender or two straight jaws, as thin sheet will otherwise ripple. For gluing use cyanoacrylate glue in a really small drop. Degrease the sheet before painting and spray a base color, otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth metal.
It will be appreciated by a modeler who builds slowly and likes working with tweezers and a magnifier. On the cockpit and the surface details the difference against plastic is visible even in a photograph of the finished model. It pays to try each part dry first and only then to reach for the glue. The kit itself, paints and glue are not in the package, unless stated otherwise.
