A plastic kit of the fire-fighting version of the famous Soviet amphibian Beriev Be-12 from the Ukrainian manufacturer Modelsvit. This kit in 1:72 scale captures a remarkable conversion of a military machine into an aerial fire-fighting special, and thanks to the size of the real subject it yields a respectable model that will certainly not be lost on a shelf.
The Beriev Be-12 Chayka is a twin-engine turboprop amphibian with a characteristic cranked gull wing, developed originally for anti-submarine patrol. It can take off and land from water and from hard runways alike, which makes it one of the most versatile flying boats of its generation. The Be-12P-200 variant came about in the 1990s by conversion into a fire-fighting aircraft: in place of the military equipment it carries water tanks, and among other things it served to prove out the procedures of fire fighting from the air within the development of the later jet fire-fighting special Be-200. It was deployed on real forest fires.
On so large an amphibian, lay the work out into subassemblies: the fuselage with its boat hull, the wing and the engine nacelles. Fill the seams on the bottom of the hull carefully, because that is where they show most on a finished model. Mask the glazing and spray the striking color scheme with an airbrush over soft transitions of masks. A fine wash will bring out the control surfaces, the landing gear bays and the panel lines, of which a short-run kit has a whole series.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
