About product

Decals for No. 312 Squadron RAF, Part III: 1:48, AML Decals

The third part of the decal range from the Czech maker AML Decals devoted to No. 312 (Czechoslovak) Squadron RAF, in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit or a finished model but a sheet of waterslide decals. Unlike the parts with Spitfires, this one focuses on Hawker Hurricane fighters, the first type with which the squadron went into action. For a modeler it is a way to build a less usual machine with a Czechoslovak crew and to add the earlier period of the unit to a collection.

The real subject

The Hawker Hurricane was a British fighter of mixed construction with a tubular fuselage frame and eight machine guns in the wing. It was simpler to build and to repair than the Spitfire, and in 1940 it made up the more numerous part of RAF fighter strength. No. 312 Squadron was formed in 1940 from Czechoslovak airmen and it was on Hurricanes that it flew its first operations before moving to the Spitfire. The machines carried the fuselage code DU with the individual letter of the aircraft, one of the key markings for which modelers buy separate decals.

Application tips

The Hurricane has a skin combining metal and fabric, so the surface of a model tends to be textured and decals settle on it less easily. That makes a gloss varnish under the decal and the honest use of a softener, which draws the film into the ribbing, all the more important. Cut the motif out closely, soak it in warm water and let it rest on a towel. Once transferred, blot off the water and let it dry completely, and only then deal with any bubbles by pricking them with the tip of a knife and adding more softener. A final matte varnish unifies the sheen and hides the edges.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Hawker Hurricane in 1:48 scale
  • Anyone interested in the early period of the Czechoslovak squadrons in the RAF
  • Builders looking for an alternative to the decals from the kit
  • Collectors completing the other parts of this range

The box holds only decals. A kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
