This injection-molded plastic kit captures the Soviet automatic anti-aircraft gun of 37 mm caliber of the 1939 model, known under the designation 61-K, in its late production form. It is not a vehicle but a towed weapon on a wheeled carriage, so the model is rewarding both on its own on a base and as an addition to a diorama. 1:48 scale is pleasant for artillery, because even the small detail of the carriage and the sight stays readable.
The automatic gun of 37 mm caliber of the 1939 model was the basis of light anti-aircraft defense. The weapon was transported on a four-wheeled towed carriage and was deployed into the firing position on outriggers, which gave the barrel a stable base for rapid fire at low-flying targets. The crew aimed by hand and the rounds were fed in clips from above. The weapon was used on its own, on the beds of trucks and on tracked chassis, and it stayed in the armament of a number of countries long after the Second World War. The late production form differs from the early one in details of the carriage and in simplifications of manufacture.
The carriage and the outriggers consist of small parts, so build them on a flat surface and keep checking that the model stands on all its outriggers in the end. Leave the barrel and the sight separate and fit them only after varnishing. Cut the parts off with a sharp knife and sand the burrs. Spray the base with an airbrush and liven up the single-color finish with a light lightening of the surfaces. A dark wash will bring out the rivets and the engraving, and a dry brush the edges. Finish the barrel with a dark shade and a hint of wear and settle the whole with dust pigments on the wheels and the outriggers.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
