A set of decals in 1:48 scale that carries the printed lozenge camouflage pattern onto a model in its four-color form for the upper surfaces. It is not the marking of a particular machine but a covering material with which the wings and other fabric-covered parts are clad. The package contains decals only.
Lozenge is the name for pre-printed covering fabric with a regular mosaic of irregular polygons, used at the end of the First World War in place of sprayed camouflage. Printing straight onto the fabric saved both time and weight, and the pattern broke up the outline of the aircraft seen from above and from below. Variants with four and with five shades were produced, and the fabric for the upper and the lower surfaces differed in coloring, darker above and lighter below. The strips of fabric were usually sewn onto the wings at an angle or across the span, and their orientation is one of those details that catch the eye on a model at once.
Sheet decals are laid strip by strip onto a gloss coat in a tone close to the pattern, so that any gaps between the strips do not glare. Lay the strip along the leading edge, float it into position with water and press the surplus liquid out with a soft cloth from the center outwards. On ribbed fabric a decal softener and patience are essential, because the film has to settle into every hollow, or it will crack once dry. Always work one strip at a time, let it dry and only then lay the next. Finally tie everything together with a clear coat, which hides the edges and evens out the sheen.
