The real subject

The A-10 Thunderbolt II is an American single-seat ground-attack aircraft intended for close support of ground units. Its distinguishing marks are a rugged airframe with a pair of turbofan engines mounted high at the rear, a twin vertical tail and a massive rotary cannon in the nose. On a model, painting is usually the most demanding part, because the camouflage schemes of this aircraft have sharp transitions between shades and intricate boundaries on both the fuselage and the wing.

What the set contains

This is a set of masking templates for the A-10 model in 1:48 scale. The templates are stuck onto the surfaces of the model before spraying and lifted off once the paint has dried, so that the edge of a shade falls exactly where it should. The scope of the templates and the kit they are cut for is given in the manufacturer's instructions. It is worth checking that the set matches the kit you are building.

Building and painting tips

Free the surface of dust and grease before sticking the template on, so that its edge sits down along its whole length. In corners and around curves, press the template down with a toothpick or the blunt tip of a pair of tweezers. Apply the paint in fine coats and work it from the edge of the template toward the middle of the area, because a heavy coat readily runs underneath. Lift the template off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch, slowly and at a shallow angle to the surface.
