About product

Hauler 1:48 armored jeep of the 82nd Airborne Division

A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:48 scale. It completes the plastic model of the light cross-country vehicle with added armor plates in the form that appeared on the vehicles of the 82nd Airborne Division. The set is cut for the Hasegawa kit. The model of the jeep itself is not included in the package.

The real subject

The 4x4 light cross-country car was a universal means of transport for Allied units. It had no protection for the crew at all, so units in the field added sheet plates to the front, the sides and around the driver's position, usually by workshop improvisation with no uniform pattern. With airborne units, which advanced without the support of heavy equipment, such a modification made particular sense. It is precisely the inconsistency of the execution that makes an armored jeep a rewarding modeling subject.

Why it is worth building this from metal

The added plates were thin in reality, and in 1:48 scale that is a fraction of a millimeter. If the same part were made from plastic, it would look like tank armor. Photo-etched sheet keeps the thinness and on top of that can be bent or twisted slightly, so the result looks like workshop work rather than a factory accessory. Degrease the metal with alcohol before gluing and fit it to a finished body; once painted, run a pencil or silver paint lightly over the edges of the plates so that they stand out. A scuffed, dusty jeep looks more convincing than a perfectly clean one.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build Allied vehicles in 1:48 scale
  • Builders of dioramas from the fighting in Western Europe
  • Those looking for an unusual variant of a common vehicle
  • Modelers with basic experience of working with photo-etch

This is an accessory set, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory for the Hasegawa plastic kit, which has to be bought separately.

They were not. They were improvised modifications carried out in the field, so the execution differed from vehicle to vehicle.

A primer for metal first, then the base shade of the vehicle. It pays to bring the edges out slightly so that the plates stand off visually.
