A resin set that replaces the plastic main landing gear wheels with castings with weighted tires of type a (GY). It is issued for the late Flying Fortresses, that is the F and G versions. Armory distinguishes its sets both by the production block of the aircraft and by the tire type, so it is worth checking both before you buy. It is not a kit; the set is fitted to the landing gear of a model built elsewhere.
Resin is cast in a silicone mold, which takes deeper undercuts than a steel mold for injection-molded plastic. Thanks to that a casting holds a crisper tread, a more pronounced transition at the sidewall and a more legible division of the hub. The wheel is also in one piece, so gluing two halves together and the tedious sanding of the seam, exactly where the tread pattern is most visible, both fall away. The weighted execution then gives the model a settled stance; on a four-engine bomber, where the weight shows at first glance, that is not cosmetic but a substantial part of the overall impression.
First a wash in warm soapy water, and only then gluing and painting. Cut the casting block off, level the surface wet and protect your airways. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; on very smooth surfaces, roughening the joint slightly helps. Check the hole for the axle dry with a drill, so that the wheel can be fitted without pressure. Apply a thin coat of base paint, then the tire in a very dark gray, and flatten it. You separate the hub with a ring of masking tape. Bring out the transition between the tire and the hub with a fine dark wash, which runs into the groove around the circumference.
This is an accessory set, not a model of the aircraft. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. Check the match with the landing gear of your own model beforehand.
