The basis of success: preparing the surface

The most common cause of paint bleeding is not the mask but the base. A smooth, well cured and degreased surface lets the edge of a mask seat perfectly. It pays to work on a gloss or semi-gloss base and to press the edges of the masks down systematically before spraying; the edge then comes out sharp the first time.

Spraying tips

• Spray the first coat across the edge of the mask only lightly, as it seals the edge against bleeding.
• Paint from the light shades to the dark ones and let the coats vent.
• Do not spray against the edge of the mask but square to it, or away from the mask.
• Put the masks back on the backing paper once lifted off and they will last the whole build.
