The most keenly felt weakness of this version was neither the armament nor the speed, but the fuel tank. The reserve of range was enough for the machine to cross the Channel, escort a bomber formation over the British capital and spend barely a quarter of an hour over the target. Pilots had to watch the fuel gauge instead of the sky and more than one of them ended the war in captivity simply because his fuel ran out over the sea. The British defense knew it and built its tactics accordingly.
The E-4 version received a revised shape of cockpit with less rounded side parts and better armored glass at the front. In the wing it carried cannons whose ammunition had a thin-walled case with a large charge of explosive, which caused markedly greater damage on a hit than fragmentation ammunition of the ordinary kind. The combination of armor, cannons and good performance at altitude made it an opponent British fighters respected throughout 1940.
The flat surfaces of an angular canopy mask well, only there are a lot of them and each has to fit to a tenth of a millimeter. Die-cut parts shorten that work and bring the same result every time. The inner layer completes the frame as seen into the cockpit, and the insignia masks replace applied crosses with spraying.
